The Mission Team from Parkview served as volunteers in Gulfport, MS. The 7 members helped the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance through the Presbytery of Mississippi during the week of April 7-May 2. We built a house for a family that had lost their home in a tornado spawned by Hurricane Katrina. They have been living in a FEMA trailer for the past 3 ½ years, about the size of a one-car garage.

Members of the team were Bob and Donna Abbott, Ron Eckert, Bob and Jan Gray, Dex and Andy Steible.

The Mission and Outreach Committee of Parkview Presbyterian would like to thank all of the members of the congregation for their continuous support of Helping Hands and Joseph’s Closet.  The committee and the two organizations continue to be amazed by the amount of donations that are made each week.

The committee thanks the congregation for their support and encourages the continuing of the donations in the appropriate containers in and outside the church.

Finally, it’s time we can plant tomatoes. Strawberries have flowers evolving into berries; blackberries blossom buds appear. Roses bloom and we discover little natural miracles, i.e., marigold seeds survived winter and now show up as seedlings. Lilacs blooming abundantly and hydrangeas are budding. Here as opposed to Nashville, Oklahoma, and Louisiana Gulf Coast our hard winter season change has a more positive appearance.

End of academic year activities and June celebrations may not have to be held indoors. Home foreclosures in Ohio are 400 less than in the same month in 2009. We have much to be thankful for.

The fifty Mother-Daughter Banquet attendees thank Judy Krugh for planning, arranging, and delegating. We thank Kim Wells for a super shopping job. Our Mona Wells delivered expertly created and decorated cookies along with a cake. Several  terrific men prepared, served, and cleaned up. All those who attended and filled the baskets for Joseph’s Coat with personal care items were good witnesses to the love of Jesus Christ. Robyn Gray, Heather Theado, and Patsy Kline (Neysa Woolf) entertained honoring mothers, daughters, and grandmothers.

Our year concluded with lunch May 20^th at DaVinci’s Market. Our appreciation extends to Chris Hoffman for serving faithfully as “Sunshine Chairperson” and Connie Borden, for serving as our treasurer. August Vacation Bible School is fast approaching.

Before lunch we viewed the exhibit of 50 baby quilts Marge Clingo made for Touching Little Lives. We learned Marge is willing to have a quilt for our fall quilt raffle. We decided to send $50 to the Birthday Offering.

WOW! Did you know that over 50 beautiful young ladies attended the Mother Daughter Banquet. The men of the church served the dinner consisting of lasagna, salad and garlic bread, with ice cream and cookies for desert. Based on the comments we heard I can only say it looks like we will need more servers to wait on the larger crowd for next year. Speaking of food and fun why don’t we have a picnic and hymn sing in July. Stay tuned for more details. Please keep your ideas coming on activities you would like to have as well as ideas to help the church grow.

Please continue to welcome new guests and visitors the way you would like to be greeted. Did you know that if everyone invited one new member the church would grow to double its size? Sounds like a challenge.

Parkview Parents Day Out program will be restarting this September.  This is a community outreach ministry, with the goal of providing a nurturing environment where young children can grow both socially and spiritually.  The program is for 2 & 3 year olds and is held at the church on Fridays, from 9:00am to 1:00pm, throughout the school year. Brochures and registration forms are on the table in the narthex.  If you know of any families that might be interested, please take a brochure to them.

Pastor’s study leave:

Reverend Gray will be down at Montreat for study leave from June 1-14^th. Please check with the church office if you have a pastoral need to be referred to the pastor covering for him.

PDA in Nashville Personnel from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance were setting up offices in Franklin, Tenn., to begin a long process of assessment in order to implement disaster recovery efforts. They were busy discussing how to tackle this disaster as news came in that 43 counties in Tennessee are now officially disaster areas. They spoke of how to assess needs in the Presbytery of the Mid South as well as the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee and of how to connect with relief efforts in the community in order to find those in need. The numbers, at this point, are a bit staggering. Possibly 20,000 or more homes were damaged or destroyed and estimates predict more than $1.5 billion worth of damage. These numbers are still being tallied, though, and are expected to increase. As information unfolds, PDA will know better how to respond. These team members expect to see a PDA presence in Tennessee for years.
